Tips For New Officials

Tips for New Officials

Submitting Availability

  • Submit availability during hours when games are being played. The best times to get games are between 8am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Submit as much availability as you can, as at many rinks as you can, as that gives the assigner more options for matching you with an appropriate game and officiating partner.
  • Be honest when submitting availability. The quickest way to gain a negative reputation with the scheduler is to consistently put your assignments on the open games list or attempt to sign up for games beyond your level.
  • Watch this video for instructions on submitting availability and requesting open games on the DCHOA scheduling web site:

General Advice

  • Ask for feedback and help on situations you are not sure of.
  • Be willing to take advice from more experienced officials. Experienced officials want to see you succeed and will often offer advice on how to improve.
