New officials are assigned for mainly U10 (“squirt”) and U12 (“peewee”) games, with an experienced official. Pay ranges from $36-$55 per game. We want every official to succeed and enjoy the games that they work. It can be difficult for new officials to get games: Officials 13 years of age and younger can only be assigned to games with an adult partner (18+), which can limit the number of games they work. Whenever possible new officials will be assigned with an experienced official.
To maximize the likelihood to be assigned games, officials should to submit as much availability, at as many rinks as possible, at times when there are appropriate games for their age and experience. This gives the assigner as many options as possible to assign games for new officials. Unlike some other sports, we won’t assign officials to games just to fill slots, we try very hard to assign officials to appropriate games with the right partner.
During the 22-23 season on average new officials under age 14 worked 3-6 games, while new officials ages 14-18 worked 5-10 games, depending on availability and other factors. Some 16-18 year olds worked more than 30 games. Some games this past season had up to 40 new officials requesting the same game – and only one can be assigned to that game.
