Membership and Registration

DCHOA Returning DCHOA Members

Welcome back. Each season, returning officials need to renew registration with USA Hockey, DCHOA, and (if applicable) the WIAA. This page walks you through each step.

✅ Before You Start

DCHOA membership expires on December 1st each season, so renewal is required every year, even if you officiated with us last season.

📋 USA Hockey Registration

To officiate USA Hockey games, you must renew your registration as an official each season.

  1. Renew your registration at the USA Hockey Membership Page.
  2. Register for and attend a USA Hockey Virtual Classroom Seminar.
  3. Complete the Online Education Video Modules.
  4. Complete the Online Playing Rules Exercise.
  5. Complete SafeSport Training online (required if born in 2009 or earlier).
  6. Complete a USA Hockey background check (required every two years if you'll be 18 or older by May 1, 2026).

Steps 2-6 are accessed through the USA Hockey Learning Center. Use the same username/password from last season, or use the forgot password/forgot username links.

📅 Official registration closes November 20, 2026, and all requirements must be complete by December 15, 2026. If you register late in the season, be ready to complete all requirements right away. USA Hockey officiating registration expires November 30 each season.

📋 Wisconsin Hockey Officials Association (WHOA)

WHOA registration is a Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) requirement to officiate USA Hockey games in Wisconsin.

WHOA registration is included with your USA Hockey registration if you use a Wisconsin address for your USA Hockey registration. Otherwise, you must register with WHOA following the instructions on the WHOA web site.

📋 Renew Your DCHOA Membership

DCHOA membership expires December 1st each season. Renew online here.

Your DCHOA scheduling account will reactivate once your USA Hockey registration for the season is confirmed.

🏫 WIAA (High School Officials)

Returning WIAA Officials:

If you officiate WIAA high school games, you'll need to renew your WIAA registration as well.

  1. Follow the renewal instructions on the WIAA website.
  2. Your WIAA registration status will update in the DCHOA system within a few days. If it doesn't, notify our registrar, who will confirm your status and update our records.
  3. The WIAA has eliminated the previous "registration windows" and administration fee for registering at other times.

New or Interested WIAA Officials (Adults only):

DCHOA assigns officials for most Big 8 and Badger Conference games. High school assigning is done in three blocks: at the start of the season (the weekend before Thanksgiving) until Winter break, Winter break (including holiday tournaments) through early January, and the rest of the season.  WIAA game assigning typically begins in October, so register early.

Adult officials interested in WIAA high school games should contact us for details and help set expectations (WIAA does not allow student hockey officials).

Registration is separate from USA Hockey and DCHOA, and we can help guide you through the process. Assignments typically begin in October—early registration is encouraged. Required steps:

  • Register with the WIAA
  • Complete a WIAA background check
  • Watch a hockey information video
  • Submit an NFHS open book rules exam

📅 Key WIAA Dates:

  • Register by October 1 to guarantee receiving a printed rule book (if you choose the printed version)
  • DCHOA WIAA Open Book Exam study session: Thursday November 5 (tentative)
  • WIAA game assigning in October. Make sure your WIAA registration is complete before assigning begins.
  • First date for games: November 21
  • WIAA video and open book exam deadline: November 21 (most likely)
