Officiating Education

📝 Game Reflections

Learning doesn't stop when the final horn sounds. After each game, new Level 1 officials complete a short reflection designed to build self-awareness and help track growth over the course of the season.

📋 How It Works

After each game, new officials receive a brief reflection form covering the fundamentals that matter most early on. Each reflection draws from a rotating set of questions, so officials are prompted to think about different aspects of their game over time rather than answering the exact same questions after every outing.

Topics covered include:

  • Pregame preparation and routine
  • Face-off mechanics and procedure
  • Positioning in the neutral and attacking zones
  • Icing and offside calls
  • Post-game review and self-assessment

Each reflection wraps up with a couple of open-ended questions, asking the official to identify one thing they'd like to improve on in their next game, and any situation or rule from the game they'd like to better understand.

✅ Why It Matters

Reflection is one of the simplest and most effective ways for new officials to build self-awareness on the ice. By regularly checking in on the fundamentals, like preparation, mechanics, and positioning, new officials develop habits that carry forward as they take on more games and progress through their officiating journey.
